The construction laborer was not long ago designated an apprentice able craft by
the U.S. Department of Labor. Laborers must have common knowledge of all work
performed by building trades people, for they are the tender or helpers in the
industry. They are called upon to operate and maintain power tools such as
chainsaws, tamping machines, concrete vibrators and chipping hammers. They also
cut, burn, demolish, use explosives, mix and tend for bricklayers and
plasterers, install sewers, cribbing and sheeting.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Laborers are exposed to all weather conditions. Sometimes they are called upon
to work at heights and also depths, sometimes hundreds of feet underground on
subways, tunnels and storage reservoirs. In their work, there is much bending,
walking, standing, lifting and carrying.
INTEREST AND TEMPERMENT
Laborers must have a broad knowledge of safety to protect themselves and
co-workers. Persons entering this occupation should be willing to perform their
work well, take pride in performance and realize their responsibilities to
fellow workers and employers. They must be able to work under close supervision
and be able to do repetitive tasks and be physically capable of performing the
work of the trade.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS OF THE JOINT APPRENTICESHIP COMMITTEE
1. Not less than 18 years of age. Proof of age may be required.
2. Physically able to perform the work of the trade.
3. Minimum of a 12th grade education, copy of a high school transcript or GED
required. Applicants must be able to read and write in the English language.
4. Must possess valid photo identification.
5. Must submit to a drug test in compliance with current drug testing standards.
6. Must have a reliable means of transportation.
Applicants will be required to complete an application form and provide
substantiating evidence or claimed qualifications.
TERMS OF APPRENTICESHIP TRAINING
üApprenticeship shall be three (3)
years
üMinimum of 4,000 hours of
on-the-job training
üMinimum of (144) hours of classroom
instruction per year
