The plasterer' trades:
Plasterers apply cement or acrylic finish products to the interior and exterior walls of hospitals, office buildings, warehouses, residences, and large commercial and industrial projects. Plasterers also fireproof buildings.
Plastering also has an artistic side. Plasterers apply intricate cornice-work, moldings and numerous wall and ceiling textures and patterns.
Modern application of the plasterering skills can be seen in the EIFS systems which use modern synthetic materials and afford architects to specify intricate detail and finishes.
Much of the work is done outdoors and depends on the weather conditions. This is a very strenuous and active trade with much standing, stooping, bending, climbing, and lifting required. The ability to work at heights is a must.
Preparation for the trade:
Good reading ability
General science
General math
Drafting
Good attendance
Qualifications:
At least 18 years of age
Possession of a high school diploma or GED
Possession of a valid driver's license
Possession of the ability to adapt to all phases of the trade
Program specifics:
Program length -4 years
6 months improver program at 40% of journeyman wage
Starting pay -50% of journeyman wage with a 6 month probationary period
144 minimum hours of classroom-related instruction per year
Currently the program has a partnership with owens community college which allows apprentices to receive college credit toward an Associate's degree.
Apprentices must pass a drug screening
