Sheet Metal Workers
fabricate and install ducts used in heating, ventilating, and air conditioning
(HVAC) systems. In addition, they fabricate and install other products such as
metal roof decks, architectural sheet metal products, pain ovens, spray booths,
dust collecting systems, and food service equipment. The work is laid out on
metal sheets from blueprints, formed, fabricated and installed on the job site.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Sheet Metal Workers are unique due to the fact that they do a great deal of shop
fabrication compared to the other construction trades. The products to be
installed begin from a flat sheet of metal. The sheet metal worker develops the
patterns from shop drawings. After the components are fabricated, they are
delivered to the job site for installation.
INTEREST AND TEMPERMENT
People interested in becoming sheet metal workers must have the ability to
follow instructions. The understanding of blueprints and the ability to work to
close tolerances are necessary. They must also enjoy working with their hands
and have the ability to think for themselves without constant supervision and
have the physical abilities to perform the work of the trade.
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND RECOMMENDED
Reading, math, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, mechanical drawing, general
metal fabrication and welding.
